At 61, I found a cardigan I actually look forward to putting on
The Cardigan That Made Me Stop Dreading the School Run
I have never written to a shop before, and I certainly did not expect my first letter to be about a cardigan.
For most of my life, getting dressed has been a negotiation. Not with anyone else — with myself. I would stand in front of the wardrobe and think: is this too much? Is this too young? Does this look like I am trying? Does this look like I have given up?
By the time I turned 60, I had settled on a uniform. Navy, grey, black. Sensible. Safe. The kind of clothes that never get commented on, which I had decided was a good thing.
Then last October, my friend Claire turned up to coffee in a Fair Isle cardigan — a heritage yoke, a soft cosy knit, a shape that skimmed rather than clung — and I could not stop looking at it.
She told me it was the Astrid, from Sophie & James London, a quiet boutique that has been dressing women our age for years. I ordered mine that evening.
It arrived on a Thursday. I tried it on over a plain white blouse, and I stood in front of the mirror for a long time.
I did not look like I was trying too hard. I did not look like I had given up. I looked like myself — on a good day.
What happened when I wore it to the school run
My granddaughter is seven, and I do the school run twice a week. It is not an occasion. It is a wet pavement, a noisy playground, and a race to get back before the rain sets in.
I wore the Astrid on a Tuesday. Under a sky the colour of porridge, I should add.
Three different women stopped me at the gate to ask where it was from. One of them said it had cheered her up just to look at it. My daughter told me I looked like I had made an effort — which, from her, I have decided to take as a compliment.
I walked home in the drizzle smiling to myself. It is a small thing, a cardigan. But it changed the whole morning.
Why it works when so much doesn't
It's warm without the bulk.
A comforting knit weight that keeps you cosy outdoors without feeling too warm the moment you step inside. I wore it to the shops on a freezing Saturday, then sat through a two-hour lunch in it without once feeling overheated. That never happens.
The heritage pattern does all the styling for you.
The Fair Isle yoke frames the face beautifully — it draws the eye up, which is exactly what you want when you're 61 and the grey months have taken their toll. I don't need a necklace. I don't need a scarf. The cardigan is the outfit.
The fit skims rather than clings.
A flattering relaxed shape with a refined hip-length hem. It works with jeans, trousers and skirts alike — and, crucially, it does not ride up or gape or do any of the things that make you tug at your clothes all day. I have worn it with jeans for the school run, and with smart trousers and loafers for lunch in town. It looks like I chose it on purpose. Because I did.
There's a real button front.
I wear it buttoned up on chilly mornings or open over a blouse for an easy, layered look. The ribbed cuffs and hem mean I can push the sleeves up when I'm busy — and they stay exactly where I put them.
What I would tell you if we were friends
If you came round and we sat in the kitchen with a cup of tea, this is what I would tell you.
Do not save your good clothes for best. The grey months are exactly when you need them most. Wear the cardigan on a Tuesday. Wear it to the school run. Wear it to the supermarket. You will feel the difference, and so will everyone who sees you in it.
It does not look like it was made for somebody half my age — and it does not look like I have given up either. It looks like I chose it on purpose.
Buy the second one before the sale ends. I did. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
About the price
When I saw the price I was suspicious. Something with this much detail — the Fair Isle yoke, the real button front, the substantial knit — I assumed would either cost a small fortune or look cheap the moment it arrived.
The Astrid is £39.95. It was £134.95.
There is no catch. They have their autumn sale on, delivery is free with Royal Mail, and it arrived looking exactly as it did in the pictures.
I did go and read the reviews before I ordered a second one. Over 1,900 of them, sitting at 4.8 stars. Not the suspiciously perfect five you see on some sites — which if I am honest made me trust it more.
One woman had written: “So flattering and easy to wear. I'm 58 and it's so nice to find pieces that feel refined without being fussy.”
That was the one that decided it for me.
If you are standing in front of your own wardrobe
You probably do not need more clothes. Before you buy anything, ask yourself: “How many things I already own could I wear this with?” With the Astrid, we think the answer is nearly everything.
Good style is not about looking younger. It is about looking like yourself on a good day.
